Nobody “Blows Out” a Drain Line

Lake Forest Plumbers have many strengths and skills. Backed by Mahoney Plumbing, this firm can tackle any plumbing situation you may face. That process begins with construction. Mahoney Plumbing and Lake Forest Plumbers stand ready for the development of new construction. The delivery, use, and disposal of water are just the obvious things they can do. The design, integration, and construction require superb knowledge and skills. If you’re building, ask your contractor to involve themearly the design process. Their knowledge and skill can save you money.

Let’s examine this thing called “rodding.” The symptoms are obvious. Drains are sluggish. The reasons are straightforward, usually hair. If somebody—or several somebodies—wash their hair (probably in the shower), eventually there will be an accumulation of hair to impede the drain. It isn’t limited to the shower, either. The simple act of cleaning a comb at the bathroom lavatory will eventually cause enough hair to congeal in the drain and plug the works. Most of us have experienced the removal of the “trap” into a bucket under the sink. Some of us have run a coat hanger through the drain. Others of us know what a “snake” is.

It’s even more fun when there is a garbage disposal involved. We learn very quickly that we don’t push potato or vegetable peelings down the “iron pig,” because they don’t grind—they just gather with a few close friends and completely close down the drain mechanism. That’s when the fun begins, because often this happens beyond the trap—beyond the point where you can just remove the trap and pull the peelings out.

Nevertheless, it happens. If you have a drain—a shower, a sink, a lavatory, a washtub, a floor drain—you might seriously consider having a periodic inspection of those drains. That’s why Mahoney Plumbing and its subsidiary Lake Forest Plumbers offer a Home Care Club (HCC). With the HCC, you can get discounts on such things—sewers, drains, heating and cooling equipment, and electrical connections. If you need help, no matter what hour of the day, they’ll be there. They charge for overtime work, but there is no service charge if work is performed during business hours.

However, this is the most important aspect of the service: they offer free annual visual inspection. They come out and look at things! And they’ll send reminders for necessary HVAC and plumbing maintenance.

What about this process called “rodding?” Sometimes the plug in your drain system is because a child has tossed a toy into a toilet. It happens. Sometimes it’s because we have put something verboten into the sewer system. It happens. However, occasionally, the plug is outside the house. There have been many different methods to connect to sanitary sewers over the years—lead pipes, composite pipes, land tile. If there is a tree on your property, that tree seeks a source of water. The water may be in the water table beneath your property—or it may be at a depth of eight feet or less along your drain lines. Maybe over the years those drain pipes have leaked. Perhaps a root has penetrated the drain system.

The best part of this malady—if there can be a best part—is that the blockage can be located by closed-circuit television. Once it has been located, next comes the rodding. On a straight shot, it’s easy. It takes time and effort, yes, but it’s easily cleared. If a pipe repair is necessary, that’s a different question, but at least the rotating blades of the rodding mechanism can ream out a drainpipe. It does tend to be a bit more difficult when the drain changes direction, but even at that, with competent equipment and a skilled operator, the task can be satisfactorily accomplished.
